In interest of being precise (and this was pointed out by two NYU students – Mike Bulger and Daniel Bowman Simon), SNAP benefits can be used to buy organic food, but WIC benefits cannot. Junk food can be purchased with SNAP but not WIC. This does not change the thrust of my previous post about inconsistencies of the way policy approaches the dual social goals of improving food access and increasing the health of individuals. It does, however, point out inconsistencies across federal nutrition policies.
